Asked for a Cover Letter? Don’t Repeat Your Resume — Stand Out Instead (CAN)

Your résumé tells what you’ve done—your cover letter tells who you are and why it matters. In today’s competitive job market, a strong cover letter is your chance to connect the dots between your experience, the institution, and the role you want. It shouldn’t repeat your résumé; it should interpret it—highlighting your value, showcasing your why, and explaining how your skills meet the employer’s needs. This session will help you understand why cover letters still matter, what employers actually look for, and how to craft a compelling narrative that sets you apart and makes them want to learn more.

This session addresses how employers communicate about complex topics such as institutional viability, organizational culture, leadership and decision-making styles, and power structures. It focuses on how to effectively engage with these subjects during the candidate screening and interview process. Participants will learn to understand and discuss where a role fits within a unit, department, and the broader campus context, providing a clearer, more holistic picture of the work environment to inform career decisions.

Sharpening Your Storytelling: What Do You Want Employers to Know? (CAN)

Everyone has a story. And in today’s hypercompetitive job market, candidates must have a firm and confident plan to share their story in clear, concise, and compelling ways. In fact, storytelling is one of the most underrated skills that many professionals often overlook or take for granted during the interviewing process. The purpose of this session is to provide an opportunity for attendees to review, reflect, and reframe their approach to storytelling during the search process. This session is designed with entry-level and mid-level practitioners in mind.

Closing the Loop: Best Practices to Prevent Interview Ghosting (EMP)

Many of us assist in recruiting new talent to our schools through service on search committees. While it can be a fun process to be a part of, it also means more work for our busy schedules. It can be hard to keep communication with candidates flowing and consistent. We can help employers audit their side of the search process for efficiencies when managing searches with the end goal of all parties having a great experience and decreasing the dreaded “ghosting” that has become all too common in recruitment.

Yes, You Have Questions: Key Questions to Ask and the Right People to Ask Them To (CAN)

The job search process encompasses several key stages. At each point, you will have an opportunity to ask questions that you can use to help better understand the role you are applying for, the culture of the institution, the team dynamics that you would be joining, and much more. To get the most out of a job search, it is essential to hone your questions early on and to think strategically about the ideal time and audience to ask those important questions. Join this session and start developing your strategy to help you find the perfect fit in your next role!

Post-Interview Etiquette: It Doesn’t Have to Be Handwritten, but a Thank You Still Matters (CAN)

Post-interview etiquette is one of the most underrated and often ignored areas of the job interview process. In today’s digital age, thank you emails have replaced thank you cards or notes customary for candidates to share to express their gratitude following an interview. Tight timelines and turnarounds for hiring decisions have increased the stakes on what used to be a nonchalant, run-of-the-mill note following the job interview. This session will help you reframe this important and often overlooked element of the job interview process into a meaningful action that reinforces your readiness, preparation, and follow-through.
